The Tibetan Master Djwhal Khul and His Work

Most of Alice A. Bailey's books are the fruit of collaboration with a Master of Wisdom who introduced himself only as "the Tibetan" or "D.K.".

How he describes himself

In his short statement of August 1934 the Tibetan says he lives in a physical body on the borders of Tibet and presides over a group of lamas. He describes himself as a brother who has travelled a little further on the Path than the average student and therefore carries greater responsibility. His work is to teach and spread the Ageless Wisdom; he works closely with the Masters Morya and Koot Hoomi.

How to accept a teaching

The most quoted part of the statement is a warning. The Tibetan does not want students to attach themselves blindly to a guru or to a Master they have not contacted. He is not interested in praise that the books are inspired or the work of the Masters. A teaching should be accepted if it finds a response in the student's illumined mind, awakens the intuition and is verified in practice; otherwise it should not be accepted.

A three-phase plan

According to Bailey's account, the Hierarchy planned to present the Ageless Wisdom in three phases before the new age:

  • IPreparatory (1875–1890). The teaching given through H. P. Blavatsky.
  • IIIntermediate (1919–1949). The thirty-year teaching given through Alice A. Bailey.
  • IIIRevelatory. The teaching to be given through an initiate early in the new century, reaching the wider public through modern media. See 2025 and the New Teaching.

Thirty years, three decades

In the first decade Bailey founded the Arcane School; the Tibetan never interfered in its running. In the second, the spread of the books announced the existence of the New Group of World Servers, and the Triangles and World Goodwill work began. In the last decade the series of books was completed and preparation for the reappearance of the Christ was emphasised. Bailey passed away in December 1949, shortly after the thirty-year work was complete.

New truths

The new areas of teaching for which the Tibetan was responsible can be summarised as: Shamballa and the will aspect; discipleship and group work in the new age; the psychology of the seven rays; the new astrology; the New Group of World Servers; the outer branch of the inner ashram; and a new world religion shaped by the three great festivals at the full moons of Aries, Taurus and Gemini. The School of Esoteric Astrology concentrates especially on the rays and the new astrology.

Master and disciple

In this teaching the Masters seek no personal loyalty or status and impose obedience on no one. The disciple proves himself through his work and takes responsibility for his mistakes. In the new age disciples will make the Hierarchy known through service, without claiming titles.
